Melbourne superstar Ryan Papenhuyzen has undergone surgery on a fractured right ankle, the NRL club confirmed today. The star fullback came off the bench in the 62nd minute of Melbourne's 37-16 win over the Gold Coast on Saturday night and was taken off the field on a medicab in the dying stages of the match.
Scans later revealed the extent of the injury, with Papenhuyzen now facing a significant stint on the sidelines. The news comes as a major blow to Melbourne, who are already without star halfback Cameron Munster due to injury.
Papenhuyzen has been one of Melbourne's most consistent performers in recent years, playing a key role in the club's premiership win in 2020. He was also named the Dally M Fullback of the Year in 2021.
The 24-year-old is expected to miss the remainder of the season, leaving a big hole in Melbourne's backline. The Storm will now be looking to other players to step up in Papenhuyzen's absence.
